AMCC’s SATA Storage on Steroids
You’VE read about the ins and outs of deploying SAS, SATA, or a mixture of the two serial storage technologies. AMCC’s new 3ware 9650SE-16ML controller card makes high-performance SATA a much more compelling sell, especially on servers used for incremental backups or data warehousing. The 9650SE product family covers everything from 2-port to 24-port configurations, but it’s the 16-port model that strikes the best balance between connectivity and a sub-$1,000 price.
From its PCI Express x8 interface to its 256MB DDR2 data cache, the 9650SE exudes speed. The controller sports an onboard I/O processor that delivers RAID offload for full hardware acceleration. Not only does the card support standard RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, and JBOD modes, but it also adds RAID 6 to the mix, protecting against data loss if a second drive fails during a rebuild. Proprietary algorithms help push maximum throughput.
AMCC does its part to promote organized cabling through its multi-lane connection system, which consolidates four SATA ports into each locked board interface. So even though you’re connecting up to 16 drives, you’re only using four cables. Add 3ware’s software utilities to the mix and you’re looking at a very powerful SATA storage offering.
